Customer Review: Noise reduction is for noise, not human voices, these work!
A reminder for those looking at active noise reduction stuff like these... These (and similar products by Bose, Kensington, Sony, et. al) are for *mechanical* noise not living creature generated noise. They won't reduce speech, crying babies, barking dogs, etc. With that in mind, I bought these to replace a set of Kensington's that served me well for almost 2 years. I make a bunch of road trips and a big handful of trips every year and noise cancelling headphones have become a saving grace on those trips. They work quite well. Because the ear cups cover the entire ear there is a good bit of passive noise cancelling just from the ear cups. Once you engage the active noise cancelling there is a slight thump and then all goes quiet. Basically no fan noise, no mechanical hum, etc. On a airplane they kill most of the engine noise. For some flights, killing all the airplane engine noise is both a pro and a con. Human voices will come right through... so don't be surprised if the pilot's or attendent's voices are a bit startling when you're sound asleep. I almost shot out of the seat the first time the pilot made and overhead announcement while I was asleep. It sounded like he was right over my shoulder. Normally I can't even understand what they're saying. Also don't be surprised when you can hear every whine, moan and sniffle of the kid who's misbehaving in the seat behind you. As for the white noise some people report while operating them, I really don't notice. It's no louder than the average zero input system noise you get from a sound board or mixing console. When I turn the music on I can't even hear it. These do work. I got mine on sale too. They're well worth the price. I'm happy to have them in my travel bag.
